"Starlights"

We sit at the City's edge
beneath the evening's flight pattern
as the light slowly changes
muting blue into gray

A mile above is the quiet hum of a DC-9
its headlights paving the way

Down here are the glittering lights from houses filled with people
who have a before and after and lives continuing beyond us.

And as you two decide which is better
the here and now or then...

I watch as your face
dims into night

And I can't make out much of anything
except the twinkling starlights of planes
lined up one by one to take the others away.
