It’s true, I’ve had a week. But there I was fighting off the pissy blahs and Cory too and then suddenly, as if a cloud broke into rain, so many things fell into place and were settled. And much, much better. We’re both pretty happy at the most recent turn of events and ready to be all smiley-face about it.
And on that note, the Friday Five.
Tonight’s Haints show is at the Capitol Bowl in West Sac! Come hang out with me, th Haints, the Little Medusas, the Helper Monkeys, the Secretions, my cousin, my brother, Roach’s mom and Kepi’s dad!
This Monday night, !!! at the Library!!! Dance party!!!
Last night's "secret" Cake show was an interesting study in, um, secrecy. Serena and I arrived at the Blue Lamp pretty damn early because we were told that if we got there any later than 9pm then we probably wouldn't be able to get in.
Well, turns out the show was so secret that the Blue Lamp was still pretty empty come 9pm and Ghetto Moments went on an hour as everyone waited for more people to show up. Cake didn't go on until well after 11 p.m. By that point the club was fairly filled - but I don't think it was in danger of selling out.
Which was fine by me - it was just crowded enough and after I got done fighting off people who kept trying to steal Serena's barstool every time she moved three inches away from it (whatever happened to asking before you take a seat that's next to another person?) I enjoyed the show in a nostalgic sort of way.
Which is not to say that Cake doesn't still sound good. They do and I danced a little but I couldn't help but keep thinking, wow - the first 21-and-over show I (legally) saw in Sac was Cake at Old I in 1991. Kind of makes a girl feel old, ya know? Also, true story: I grew up across the street from Todd Roper and used to hear him practice drums every afternoon, so, for purely sentimental friendship reasons, I still miss having him in the band. I know, I know, it's been forever, time to move on, blah blah blah.
Highlights: "Shadow Stabbing" - my absolute all-time favorite Cake song, "Daria," "Excuse Me, I Think I've Got a Heartache," and "Mexico."
Sorely missing: "Jolene," "Frank Sinatra" and "I Will Survive."
Also, Cake is no longer on Columbia so if you want to check out the band's new album you'll have to visit their web site.
OK, it is Friday and I have the day off, can I get a hell, YEAH? Seriously - it's been forever and I'm taking a long overdue comp day and I'm feeling all giddy just because I still have the whole weekend and I don't have to deal with any bullshit today. I am so DONE with people right about now. Also: This Sunday is the antique fair which means I get to wander around aimlessly for a few hours and just revel in other people's junk. My favorite pasttime, that.
And speaking of junk, here's your guide to becoming a hipster.
