join the record club

Last night's Baby Grand / Zebras show at the Press Club was way fun for a Wednesday night.

Ok, confession: I didn't stay for the Zebras because my friend wanted to go home and I was also pretty damn tired thanks to a killer case of allergies. But I thought Baby Grand rocked it and I loved all the stuff Roger was playing before their set. I think he's doing a cool thing with this "Record Club" night and I definitely intend to check out some of the other shows he books. They're usually on Sunday nights though, so just a heads-up there. Anyhoo, Cory said the Zebras were pretty awesome and I'm kind of bummed that I have to be someplace early Saturday morning or else I would go with him to SF to check them out here.

Next subject: New music.
For the first time in a long time I'm kind of happy about some new music. Loving the new Amy Winehouse record - think a modern-day Roni Spector singing about booze, drugs and sex. Britney Spears should cover "Rehab."

And I just love that Lily Allen record to death - it makes me happy and I don't the last time a record actually made me laugh out loud. In a good way, I mean.

Also, the new Bloc Party and !!! make me wanna dance, dance, dance...

Also, if Super Furry Animals aren't going to put out records anymore than the Gruff Rhys album is a pretty good trade.

Oh, and the Mirah record - it's a thing of joy.

Locally you should pick up the Agent Ribbons disc. Kind of amazing actually with its sophisticated, folk-pop sound. And the cutest hand-made covers.

Speaking of local, I had the chance to see Ancient Sons last week and they had a couple of songs that really popped. Literally - just the sweetest Beatles-Zombies pop.

Oh, and speaking of Agent Ribbons - they're playing this weekend at Old I with the always-amazing Wanda Jackson. It's Sunday at Old I. $17 - which is kind of expensive but, hey, it's Wanda Jackson. You should go.
