Just sitting here half-heartedly watching "Attack of the Clones". No one ever said the acting or writing in the first two "Star Wars" films was top-notch, but somehow the sum total of the actors, script and effects equaled something much greater than what exists in these newer films.
Then again, I did have a huge crush on Han Solo –and still do –so perhaps my perspective on this subject was/is clouded. Also, I have a real soft spot for the first two films because of the sense of nostalgia they bring on. My dad took me to see the original when I was 7. I remember it was a soggy, hot July day in Austin. I was wearing shorts and a tank top and ended freezing in the theater. But that didn’t stop me from loving the film – Princess Lei, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, etc., etc…what was not to love? Also, it’s one of the few good memories I have of being with my father so it means even more to me for that reason alone. Also, later that summer Mark the Neighbor Kid and I spent an awful lot of time playing our own version of Luke and Leia…Sounds dirty but come on, we were only 7. I mostly remember reciting dialogue and kicking up clouds of dirt when we got to the battle scenes. I wonder what ever happened to him.
I saw “The Empire Strikes Back” in the theater as well – and loved it of course – but my bigger, shinier memory of that film comes from its soundtrack. My mom bought me it on cassette – and it wasn’t just the score but also had all the film’s dialogue. I used to listen to it on my Walkman when I’d take my baby brother for a walk through the neighborhood during the 1980 Texas heatwave. And yes, I saw “Return of the Jedi” in the theater too – by this point my parents were separated and my mom took me and my brothers as a treat. I remember enjoying it at the time but it's always been my least favorite of that first trilogy. I blame it all on the Ewoks.
Now the new films --eh, it’s just trite to even say how yawn-inducing they are. The dialogue is stilted, the action and story feel contrived, the actors seem uncomfortable and the special effects are claustrophobic, not awe-inducing. And Jar Jar? Lucas should be strung up by his toes for ever thinking
that was a good idea.
Not sure if I’ll go see the newest film in the theater – I did see the original re-releases and the first prequel in the theater but skipped "Attack of the Clones" until now. If anything, I’ll at least see "Revenge of the Sith" when it comes out on DVD- the new trilogy is less than inspiring but I suppose there is something to be said for closure.
